Flannel Projects: Acorns and Elephants

My next flannel projects this week are flannel nuts and flannel elephants. I'm enjoying using the embroidery thread to add some details so both of these ones have a little added detail!

I regularly use the elephants for the Five Elephants in the Bathtub chant from Jbrary. It's one of our favorites!

One elephant in the bathtub,
Going for a swim.
KNOCK, KNOCK (clap, clap)
SPLASH, SPLASH (slap your thighs)
Come on in!
Count up...2, 3, 4, 5

We use nuts for a rhyme about a squirrel:

Down around the corner by the big oak tree,
Sat five little acorns as tasty as can be.
Along came Mr. Squirrel with his big bushy tail,
He took one acorn and ran off down the trail.
Count down...4, 3, 2, 1

My county just announced it will soon issue a stay-at-home order. So we shall see how that will affect my continuing to come to work and my future projects...

Flannel Projects: Fish and Dinosaurs

The next two flannel projects that have been completed are fish and dinosaurs. I have plans to do several storytimes over this summer that will use fish. And, whenever we reopen, I also plan to do a storytime about dinosaurs since that is always a favorite!

For some fish themed activities, check out this ocean storytime or Slippery Fish from Jbrary

For some dinosaur themed activities, check out this dinosaur storytime.

Coronavirus / Flannel Projects: Cupcakes & Strawberries

We have had quite an upheaval the last week or so. I went on a trip with my family to Ireland only to return quickly to the U.S. because of the coronavirus. And, now, my library is closed to the public for the next few weeks...potentially longer.

In the meantime, we are highlighting all of our online services and materials for our patrons, especially while schools are closed.

While we are closed to the public but still reporting to work, I am trying to use the time to update our flannels. I do not always have time to make new flannels or, when I do make them, spend more than a few minutes throwing them together. One project that I can do is work on my flannel collection so my storytimes can be even more amazing when we re-open.

This week I have been working on re-making my flannel cupcakes and strawberries.

Stay tuned for more flannels to come...

Jump

This week we are JUMPing and talking about different animals that jump.

Books:
Jump! - Scott M. Fischer
You Can Do It, Bert! - Ole Konnecke
Jump! - Tatsuhide Matsuoka
Is Everyone Ready for Fun! - Jan Thomas

Activities:
1. Five Green and Speckled Frogs (I finally used the flannel board I made last May!!!)
2. "Who Jumps?" - Puppet show loosely based off of the book "Who Hops?" by Katie Davis:
For this activity we filled our bag we use for puppet activities with a variety of puppets. Some of the puppets were animals that jumped and others were not. I held up an animal, asked the kids what sound it makes, and then asked if the animal jumps or not. The kids, especially the toddlers, loved it!
3. Zoom, Zoom, Zoom (from previous Space storytime)
